Mean, median and mode

In class on Wednesday's this term we are looking at different aspects of chance and data. Over the past two weeks we have been practising mean, median and mode.

I'll you give you an example. If a family had 5 children and there ages were as below. Find the mean, median and mode.

6, 12, 3, 2, 6

Mean (average) - add all the numbers together and then divide by the amount of numbers
E.g. 6+12+3+2+6 = 29
29 / 5 = 25 r 4 OR 25.8
Therefore the median is 25.8

Median (middle number) - before finding the median you MUST put all numbers in ascending order then the number in the middle is your median. If you have an even amount of numbers you must add the two middle numbers and divide by 2.

2, 3, 6, 6, 12
6 is in the middle, therefore the median =6

Mode (number that occurs the most often) = if you have no numbers that occur more than the others then your data has no mode.

With our data 6 occurs twice and the others only occur once, therefore the mode is 6.
