Swan River Poetry - Jack

I was lying across a plank,
For that special place was a tree,
Built along a riverbank,
Shining as a message to be,
It wasn’t much but it was enough,
The tree wasn’t all but rough.

Water splashing against the bay,
Filling my mouth with all the salt,
Making me wonder whether to stay,
Feeling like doing a somersault,
Parakeets chirping as though with glee,
Watching the dolphins trying to flee.

The waves spiraled around me,
Glittering in the mighty sun,
Giving me so much company,
I was alone but having fun,
It made only try to think,
Not to miss a single blink.

For when in my bed at night,
I think of the masses of pollution,
Which can’t but give me a fright,
I think everyone must show cooperation,
To clean up the almighty river,
So that more people can go hither.

Swan River Poem by Max

As night fell upon the murky river,
A lone black swan dashed onto the shore,
It fell to the ground and started to quiver,
Looking weak all the way down to the core,
Occur this did upon the bay,
Under the stars of the Milky Way.

I ruffled his feathers and smelt blood,
The poor little bird had an injury,
I started looking for members of his brotherhood,
The creature had been injured nearly fatally,
Take care of the bird I did for a while,
Allowing him and the water to reconcile.

At last I was able to let him go,
Although I felt sad and lonely I must,
So away he floated on the river flow,
Back into the world he was thrust,
Darker and Gloomier the bay now felt,
So I ran away at a fast little pelt.

Back home I am now behind the brick walls,
Thinking of the bird of which I have saved,
Feeling proud of my desperate little cause,
Helping the animal that was hopelessly depraved,
After all this action in just one little day,
I think I'll go sleep and think of the bay.

Daffodils (poetry)

The Daffodils

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed - and gazed- but litte thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of soltitude:
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

In class we read the poem to ourselves, then aloud. We decoded the pattern and focused on interesting words or words we were unsure of. The boys had such fantastic indepth conversations with each other about the meaning of different lines.

As you can see the pattern is what we call an A, B, A, B, C, C poem. In other words line 1 and 3 have a rhyming word at the end of the line, line 2 and 4 have a rhyming word at the end of the line; and lines 5 and 6 have a rhyming word at the end of their lines.

Another important thing to remember about poems like these are that they have a beat a bit like music. The beat is created by the syllables from each line. Boys practised their syllables by making the beats to their names as well as the lines.

Our class will now be writing our own poems based on the patterns of the poem above. We too will be focusing on beauty in nature, however we will be writing ours about the Swan River.

Some boys will be catching up on this session next week (who have been absent) and will need to write their own poems for homework. In class with the boys who are here we will be brainstorming words about the Swan River and finding other words that rhyme with them. I will put that list on the blog next week so help those boys writing their at home.

Aussie Optimism - reschedule party

Hi everyone,
we have nearly come to the end of our Aussie Optimism Program for the year. I did mention to the boys who were here on Monday that we would probably have a party to celebrate next Tuesday however there are a few speed bumps in the road.

1. It is book week and there are several lunchtime activities going on; and
2. So many boys have been away this week that we aren't ready to conclude the program just yet.

We will still try to complete the Aussie Optimism Program over the next couple of weeks, but we will probably have our party sometimes after mid term break.

Sorry for any inconvenience in changing the dates.

Maths helpers

On Wednesday our maths class (including some maths extension boys and all maths assistance boys) participate in chance and data activities. This term we have already been looking at analysing data using mean, median and mode. Yesterday we created bar graphs using excel to display our data and started analysing different types of graphs.

We will be further reading data and making our own graphs to suit research we conduct. Below is a great website explaining how to choose the correct type of graph for the data you have.
http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/help/user_guide/graph/whentouse.asp

This website, whilst not as good, also provides an image of each type of graph:

Happy graphing everyone :)

Whole school library Olympics competition

Well done to all the boys in our class who helped to find the answers to the three questions each day in the bulletin. I was amazed how well you all worked together and complimented each other on your efforts. I am very proud to say we came second winning the silver medal out of all the Year 5 and 6 classes. Fantastic effort boys!

Homework Week 4

Well done on surviving your first debate today boys. I can see you all worked really well in class and practiced your speeches at home.

For this week we are returning to a writing task. Over the next two weeks we will be focusing on dictionary skills to help us improving our speed in finding words during writing tasks in class. This week in mathletics we will be consolidating skills learnt over the past couple of weeks with capacity and mass, as well as looking at some elements of volume. REMEMBER any questions about any activities should be asked throughout the week NOT on Friday morning. I am more than happy to help anyone having trouble using time management or who need further explanation of tasks.

There is also a spelling website that follows our spelling texts in class. I have given boys the choice this week whether they wish to make the printed game OR to do the website activities as their fourth spelling task.

The website is: www.soundwaveskids.com.au
The password for everyone is: barn964

The Swan River

I hope by now the boys have told you we are focusing on water and the Swan River for our Integrated Studies Unit this semester.

We have already reviewed the water cycle to show what the boys had retained from last year. They made the most amazing posters with definitions, labelled diagrams and an explanation.

Using the following website we also discussed some of the Swan River's history which we will be looking more into next week. If you would like to read some of the information we discussed, the website is below:

Mean, median and mode

In class on Wednesday's this term we are looking at different aspects of chance and data. Over the past two weeks we have been practising mean, median and mode.

I'll you give you an example. If a family had 5 children and there ages were as below. Find the mean, median and mode.

6, 12, 3, 2, 6

Mean (average) - add all the numbers together and then divide by the amount of numbers
E.g. 6+12+3+2+6 = 29
29 / 5 = 25 r 4 OR 25.8
Therefore the median is 25.8

Median (middle number) - before finding the median you MUST put all numbers in ascending order then the number in the middle is your median. If you have an even amount of numbers you must add the two middle numbers and divide by 2.

2, 3, 6, 6, 12
6 is in the middle, therefore the median =6

Mode (number that occurs the most often) = if you have no numbers that occur more than the others then your data has no mode.

With our data 6 occurs twice and the others only occur once, therefore the mode is 6.

Here is a link so a song we also used as part of our warm up in class:

Lifecycles

As part of our guided reading this term all boys are reading National Geographic books based on different non-fictional topics. The books range in difficulty but all look at the same concept. This week we looked at lifecycles including inherited and learned behaviours. We read about Monarch Butterflies, Giant Pandas, Komodo Dragons and The Poison Dart Frog. You may like to ask your son about lifecycles or the animal they read about.
