Congratulations to our three class winners who will be going through to the next round of the Speech Competition. They are:
Riki Wylie with the story of coffee
Max Lee with a speech all about door knobs; and
Charlie Ausden convincing us about the importance of lollies.
A special mention must also go to Samuel Weight with his amazing speech about the humble potato.
Well done to all boys. It was clear that everyone prepared exceptionally well. There was a very high standard of speeches this year.

Homework Week 6
Homework will go back to normal for this week now that our speech competition is complete.
Boys need to complete by Friday:
-spelling practice 5 nights signed in their diaries (our class receives their spelling list on a Friday so this may be signed on the Friday or weekend days)
-times tables at least 3 times a week (this should be tables they need to practice not ones they already know well. We will be having a times tables test to see how much they have improved in a few weeks.)
-mental maths (the next double page)
- reading 5 nights a week
This is our last term for our times tables as next term we will be doing a weekly writing task so let's really make it count boys!

Costumes for 6LA Assembly Performance
Hi everyone,
we didn't have a great response to costumes and props and since we are getting closer to the time now we have to organise what we will be wearing on the day.
I know many of the boys are past the dress ups age with what they have at home so my suggestion would be to wear black pants and a coloured t-shirt relating to the insect they are going to be. If anyone has their own costumes at home already organised that's absolutely fine, otherwise each boy will be choosing an insect they want to be out of:
-bee
-ladybird
-praying mantis
-butterfly
The parents who are helping us out on the week of the production will be helping to cut out and assign some masks that I will be printing out for the boys. We will also try to put together some antennas.
Some costumes such as the main ladybirds and the spider I already have some parts they can use for their costumes and will talk to the boys about these today. I will also try to send home a letter for anyone that may not have seen this blog update.
Not long now! The boys are getting very excited at school.

Speech competition
All Year 6 boys will be competing in a speakers' challenge over the coming weeks. The best three boys from each Year 6 class will be chosen and will compete against each other in the Chapel. From that competition two to three boys will be chosen to compete against speakers from other schools.
Our class will be deciding on our champion speakers next week on Friday. All boys have been asked to prepare a speech on a topic of their choice. It is to go for 2-4 minutes and the order will be picked out of a hat. All boys MUST have palm cards.
Each speech must have :
An introduction stating clearly what the speech is about.
A clear direction / purpose (to inform, persuade etc.)
A closing statement to finalise their speech.
Some topics boys could choose are:
1. What makes you happy?
2. Our last vacation trip.
3. Fairy tale characters you would like to talk with.
4. Magic tricks you can show.
5. Funny things my pet has done
6. My favourite family story.
7. Oceans in the world.
8. My neighbourhood.
9. Funny costumes.
10. A visit to the doctors, dentist.

Lego competition
A few weeks ago we watched as a class a really interesting video on you tube about a lawyer who quit his job to become a Lego artist. As a class we decided to have a competition to see who could come up with the most unique and original piece of artwork using Lego. It could not be part of a set such as Star Wars, it had to be original.

Tomorrow we will be looking at our designs and announcing a winner. Good luck everyone who chose to take on this challenge.
Here are some ideas before of artwork that has been made using Lego.

Weekly homework
Just a friendly reminder that all boys are supposed to have written and signed in their diaries their reading x 5, times tables x 3 and spelling x 5. Mental maths books are also due every Friday. The only exception to this are the boys in maths extension who do their own maths homework and therefore do not need to complete mental maths or times tables.
Some boys will be staying in to complete mental maths, times tables, reading or spelling during some of their breaks if this does not improve to help them catch up.
I do understand some boys are doing their work but not getting it signed. It is important for them to manage their diaries and come to you to have it signed off each day. This is part of their organisational skills.
Thank you for all your support in advance.

SOSE / Homework
For Term Two our class are looking at Federation and Democracy. In SOSE today we looked at symbols used to represent each State and Territory, as well as the Australian flag. Below are some of the State symbols.
Any student who didn't complete his colouring he has been asked to complete it at home tonight since the class was given plenty of time today.

Mrs Hookey has asked for all boys to have a look at the top three websites and decide what alternative energy they would like to research as part of their library assignment this term. Our class have library on Monday so it would be beneficial for each boy to have an idea which energy he will choose.

Spelling for term 2
Our spelling program for term 2 will consist of each boy choosing 10 words from a list to practice each week for a spelling test every Friday.
I will put our spelling lists on a tab above over the weekend so you are able to see the list the boys are selecting from. Some boys will be also given extension words.
We have a text book accompanying our list words this term that focuses strongly on graphemes (spelling patterns and sounds). Since we are using a text it is close to impossible for the boys to do any activity without it and therefore I do not want the text books to come home. You are more than welcome to pop into our classroom to see what we are doing in spelling anytime though.
Spelling words will now be copied into students diaries and they need to get have their diaries signed every night for times tables, spelling and reading.
